PLAYING FROM DEEP ROUGH

In the summer months the rough grows thick so when playing from this deep rough close the clubface slightly when addressing the ball. This compensates for the grass wrapping itself around the club as the shot is played and forcing the face open. If you address the ball with the clubface too open it could lead to that dreaded word ‘shank’!

With a firm grip pick the club up steeply in the backswing and swing down into the back of the ball. A full flowing follow-through is not required but try to keep the club going through impact down your intended target line. A club with a heavy flange helps drive the clubhead through the grass. It is a recovery shot not a distance shot. Be prepared to just get the ball back into play on the short cut of the fairway.
