PLAYING OUT OF FAIRWAY BUNKERS
When the ball is sitting up in a bunker take the same club you’d use for a fairway lie, unless the face of the bunker interferes with the trajectory you may expect from the use of the club. If it does, then your club should be one that will get you out regardless of whatever is the distance you can expect. The main thing is to get out.
If you haven’t a good lie in a bunker, take any club that will get you out on the fairway where the next shot will be easier. Where the average golfer often drops a stroke is by making a desperate attempt to hit a long recovery shot from a bunker and bangs the ball into the face of the bunker or into another trouble spot such as the rough.
